Celestite's tranquil light blue color comes from a natural radiation process that creates trapped electrons, known as "color centers" in the crystal structure, often stabilized by trace potassium.

Also known as Celestine, this stone is very soft - a 3-3.5 on the Mohs scale, about the same as a copper penny. Because of its softness, tumbled Celestite found in the market contains resins or stone sealers that are added to the stones prior to tumbling - othwerwise, they would crumble and never make it through the process. All the polished Celestite you will find at Riverbend has been lovingly hand-polished by skilled artisans to preserve its structure, without the addition of any resins or sealers.

Celestite is highly cherished for its calming and uplifting properties, often associated with angelic communication, inner peace, and spiritual development. Invite this exceptional crystal into your meditation space or carry this touchstone with you to recenter throughout your day.

Sourcing Insights

  • Softness & Fractures: Genuine Celestite is an extremely soft and fragile mineral. It's common to see minor natural fracture lines or small chips, especially in hand-polished pieces, as these indicate it hasn't been overly treated or resin-coated.
  • No Sealers: Be wary of Celestite that feels unusually smooth or looks unnaturally perfectly intact, particularly if it's "tumbled." Most tumbled Celestite is coated in resin or stone sealer due to its fragility. Your hand-polished Celestite is untreated.
  • Color Consistency: Authentic Celestite typically has a pale to medium blue hue. While vibrant, it's generally not neon or artificially bright. Be cautious of unnaturally uniform or overly intense colors, which could indicate dyeing.
  • Clarity: It can range from translucent to transparent. Perfectly opaque pieces without any visible crystalline structure should raise a question.
