Authenticity Tips

  • Color: Genuine raw Emerald should have a natural, deep to vivid green color. Be cautious of pieces that are unnaturally bright, fluorescent, or have a perfectly uniform color without any variation, as these might be dyed or synthetic.
  • Inclusions (Jardin): Emeralds are famous for their natural inclusions, often called "jardin" (French for garden). These are internal characteristics like tiny fractures, gas bubbles, or mineral crystals. A completely "flawless" raw emerald is extremely rare and should be viewed with skepticism, as it might indicate a synthetic stone or heavy treatment.
  • Crystal Habit: Raw emerald often forms as hexagonal prisms. Look for evidence of this natural crystal shape, even if the piece is rough.
  • Treatments: Most emeralds are treated (oiled or filled) to enhance their clarity. While common for faceted emeralds, raw pieces should ideally be untreated or minimally treated. Be suspicious of raw pieces that appear unnaturally clear without any visible inclusions.
  • Hardness: Emerald is relatively hard (7.5-8 on the Mohs scale). It should not be easily scratched by a steel knife.
